April 2007

Now that American Idol is the #1 TV show in the world, they are doing something about “giving back.” They’re donating money to Africa and to depressed areas in the U.S.
“How will you change the world?” makes for a good theme for the week.

Chris Richardson - “Change the World” - Excellent song choice! Personally I’m tired of the Eric Crapton version. The song in and of outself is a classic. Good tune, fine lyrics. But it needs a more modern voice, shall we say, to give it life again. I was pleased to hear (even) Chris Richardson sing it. It got the judges’ attention, all of it favorable.

Melinda Doolittle - “There Will Come A Day” - Melinda has been blooming since she got on American Idol. I’ve never seen her prettier than she was tonight. The judges gush, particularly Simon.
Blake Lewis - “Imagine” - This was a kinda obvious song choice. But Blake sings it with sincerity, as Simon noted.

LaKisha Jones - “I Believe” -  C’mon, Kiki, you’ve got to make sure you’re not in the Bottom 3 for this week! Just kidding. You’re back in your element. But I’m thinking… as good as LaKisha is, I’m siding more with Melinda tonight.

Simon belittles Paula yet again by declaring “What Paula is trying to say is…” Even if Paula is inarticulate, it’s not Simon’s job to explain her to the rest of the world.

And again Simon tells the crowd booing him to shut up.
If Melinda (or LaKisha for that matter) were to get eliminated, it would be no injustice. Melinda and LaKisha are in such a different league, they’re beyond American Idol. They’re already gotten the exposure they need; they’re already “discovered.” They don’t need to be an American Idol.

Thanks to Jennifer Hudson and her Oscar, precedent has been established for an Idol runner-up to have a stellar career. Heck, even Clay Aiken proved that in Season 2.

Phil Stacey - “The Change” - Ugh, this guy is still here. Why couldn’t he have been eliminated much earlier? And it’s looking like he’s going to be around for yet another week. “People like you,” Simon said. Don’t count me in that group, though.

Jordin Sparks - “You’ll Never Walk Alone” - Amazing performance! She sang a song that I recognized (heh heh), it tied in really well with the theme without being too obvious or too patronizing, and she sang like she truly believed it.

So now I’m at the point where I want Jordin to win. In terms of American Idol, she would be a great winner. She’s 17, she’s good-looking, she’s talented and has that IT factor. She would be the best contestant to win the title.

My line-up for this week:

  1. Jordin Sparks
  2. Melinda Doolittle
  3. Chris Richardson - because he had a really good song choice
  4. Phil Stacey
  5. LaKisha Jones - too much shouting
  6. Blake Lewis - though he’s my favorite, he was the weakest this week
