XP is back and people want less crapware
If you were looking to purchase a new PC recently, you would find that most retailers are pushing Windows Vista as they probably should since it’s the latest Microsoft operating system released earlier this year. What you don’t know if you don’t follow technology news or if you mainly play games on your PC is that Vista is still shaky and has probably 15% support to games out there.
This is why gamers and people who want to purchase a PC for a variety of different activities besides business use should stick to Windows XP Pro (I am not even sure what’s the point of Home edition). Dell has been asking their customers of its IdeaStorm project to help them come up with product ideas. “Bring Back Windows XP” received an overwhelming response. The PC maker decided to offer XP again on an option for small business customers and will bring it back for home users. Full story on CNet News.
In other news: Do you remember how you get a brand new computer with a bunch of Icons for trial offers? yep that’s the crapware I am talking about. This is why I never purchase a pre-built machine. I would rather spend the time (which is not that long these days) to build my own and install the OS the way I like it to be configured. There is also this article on CNet about how PC makers are walking the fine line with ‘crapware’. What’s interesting is the poll they have on that page. At least 68% of CNet readers would rather pay more to have less crap installed. Of course I would rather not deal with it as I mentioned earlier
If you want to talk about specific technology topics, send me an email or post here I’d be happy to share my opinions with you on these subjects. Now back to my newly built system with 4 GB of RAM
